This is done to secure the prices for a certain commodity when it comes time to harvest. All you are doing is buying and selling contracts, in fact.

This can be done in the traditional way, of course. You can visit your broker, and buy and sell while at the brokerage firm. But remember, this is not your main job! It's just another source of income, which is why it's recommended that you open an account with a reputable broker and monitor your account online. Then, you can do spot-checks of basic goods in other time zones and make reasonable decisions from there, with an input from your broker, of course.
